Alison Wheeler is Chair of Wikimedia UK, part of the family that operate Wikipedia - one of the top ten websites in the world. Wikipedia, like many  "Web 2.0" services, rely on the input of their users, but is that always the best option? How do you get them to do what you want and not take liberties? What about the legalities?

Democracy within an online world - Can it ever work? a discussion

EVE-Online and Livejournal have both recently joined Wikimedia in having elections from their users to help guide their future. In each case though the turnout was very low, even though there was no cost to stand or vote. Can such ideas ever be practical?
