It has been quite a challange to get the tickets to barcamp London. I missed the first round where the tickets were gone after 30 seconds but I managed to get a ticket in the second round but it had been a rush.
I left the office late, ran back from the train station to my flat, stormed trough the door, sat down on the floor opened my macbook and the exact time firefox loaded the page to 20:00 and I was one of the lucky ones
Now that I am in London since yesterday all stress is gone and I´m really excited about today and tomorrow.

This time venue sponsor of barcamp London is “the guardian” and they have a really impressing office - videos will follow later.
After breakfast and a small opening session with emma we had the first competition - a lego contest. The attendees got seperated into groups and had to build a letter out of lego.
At the end the letters form to the word barcamp and it was amazing how colorful and creative the letters are.
(ok you can`t really see it in the video..)
Now the first sessions are running - I´m at the session about “listen to your customer” but I would say it should have been called “how spreadshirt interacts with their customers” at least until now..
But it turned at the end towards a discussion about the general topic of how to interact with your customer in social media with the focus on twitter. Very interesting for me because at the moment I`m involved in such a project.
After an amazing lunch with a big range of sandwiches, chips and chocholate bars (one reason why I love London are the sandwiches
) the sessions continued.
This time there are not that many topics outside of tech-focus, so I choose the guardian API.
If you want to play around with this API all you need to know can be found here
Some examples for the use of the guardian API are
- Alternative search with a timeline for the results
- Monthly trend charts
- Your MP´s - a search which searches for your MP`s
- API Maps - search for a word and if you click on the article and see where it tooks place on a map
Guardian DATA STORE - spreadsheets on google docs full of research data of guardian researchers which can be used by everyone.A lot of the data sets will be updated all the time
Very clever idea because in this way they can and they want the people to work with that data and show what you can make of it.
You can find a lot of examples at the ouseful blog
The next session is about
a very interesting project, which sounded to me like kind of a summize for videos at first… Looked good but I think it is better to let them discribe it in their own words (via URIplay website)
URIplay is a name service for media content, giving each file a URI and a simple description. Think of it as DNS for media. The service is not intended to be used directly by viewers. Like DNS, it works behind the scenes to make things easier. [...]URIplay aims to restore simplicity to the experience without reducing choice. We compile and publish metadata files listing the URIs at which content can be played. Each URI is described in terms of media data format, revenue model, and restrictions applied. Developers will be able to use this information and our open API to refer precisely to the content and select appropriate URIs for their users. (via URIplay)
By the way - the Code is open source.
You can test the demo at the URIplay site
